Live Life as Good Stewards of the Church

I Corinthians 16 - July 7, 2013.

In the original letter the Corinth church wrote to Paul, they asked him about the collection he was taking for the poor Jewish Christians in Jerusalem. He answered their question and closed the letter with his traveling plans and those of his associates. Paul hoped this would help unite the Jewish and Gentile believers.

This closing chapter addresses three areas of stewardship: money, plans, and friends. The early church met on the first day of the week in commemoration of the resurrection of Christ. Giving should be an act of worship to our risen Savior, not to impress men! Secondly, Paul shares his plans with his friends for his future travels and ministry, but notice his statements are very tentative. Everything was dependent upon God’s providential leading. “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9) When we are in the word, pray, have pastoral counsel, and are in fellowship with the body of Christ, God is faithful to lead us in the path of righteousness for His name’s sake. Finally, Paul was not only a soul winner, but a friend maker. Many found their way into faithful service in the body of Christ because of meeting him. People are the greatest asset to a church, more valuable than our money and our plans. If we are prepared like Jesus prepared his disciples, then God will lead our plans and provide the money and His plans will be accomplished. The individual Christian and the church should be constantly asking, “What opportunities is God giving us to day?” rather than complaining about our obstacles and struggles. We must take advantage of the opportunities that are coming our way, and leave the results to the Lord.
