Judges 2:19 - And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way.

Shocking headlines like these are usually found on the front page of supermarket tabloids, but these actually describe the events in the book of Judges. The Israelites would look to the Canaanites for pleasure, but would only experience pain. They would rejoice in their worldly freedom only to see that freedom turn into their bondage. Had the Jews obeyed the Lord, their armies would have been victorious, but left to themselves they were defeated and humiliated. The people wasted their suffering and God’s grace was in vain. They didn’t learn the lesson God wanted them to learn and grow from His chastening. God delivered His people by raising up judges, who defeated the enemy and set his people free. God raised up His Son Jesus Christ in the likeness of sinful flesh on account of Sin. He condemned sin in the flesh that we might not be humiliated on a front-page tabloid, but be a praise to His name! Sermon 0701-01 on 7/9/14, Judges 1-2 “Live Life Fighting Apathy”
