Matthew 16:19 - “And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Peter used these keys three times, with the first one to open the door of faith in heaven to the Jews in Jerusalem and Judea in Acts 2 at the day of Pentecost. He used the second key given to him by Christ also for the Samaritans in Acts 8 to open the heavenly door to a lost and confused mixed breed of Jew and Gentile. Lastly, in Acts 10 he would be used of God with his third key to bring the Gentiles into the body of Christ from all ends of the earth (Acts 1:8 and Mark 16:9). Realize that a key is an instrument for keeping the unwanted locked out and for opening the door to allow only those who have the privilege and right to go in. He that is in possession of the key has the power of granting access, and has the general care and wellbeing of the house. In the Bible, we see that a key is a type of symbol for management by overseeing the performance or operation of a person or group, a symbol of power and authority (Isa 22:22; Rev 1:18; Rev 3:7). When Jesus says He will give to Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven, He means that He will make him the instrument of opening the door of faith to the world, not just to the Jews, as the Apostle first thought. The honor that Peter had was first opening the doors of the gospel to the Jews, Samaritans, and then to the rest of the Gentile world. This old wine skin bound in heaven was for the Jews who alone had the promises and covenant of God was now loosed in heaven through Peter’s obedience, and the New Covenant in Christ’s blood was now divinely bound in heaven allowing all to have the promises and covenant of God to gain forgiveness and access to through Christ.
